I am currently in the process of moving this site to a new location. This will be accompanied by a complete site renovation!
The new site is at http://www.webdrake.net/Otherspace/
This site will probably only be up for a month or so more (as long as it takes for me to put the new site together) so you may want to update your bookmarks and links soon.
Thanks!
Designs for Characters and Technology
Return to the RPG Index or
the main page.
Imagine a future where humanity returns to a new Dark Ages.
Technology, once seen as a saviour, is now a sin to use or make: and
the Universal Church is swift in hunting down the people who break its
laws. The majority of people live in indentured servitude and do not
so much as dream of a day when they, or even their distant descendants,
might enjoy the sweet taste of freedom. These poor serfs are ruled over by Noble Houses, whose way of life
is everything that the serfs' are not. Nobles have money, technology,
and virtual freedom to do what they wish: they answer but to the
Princes of their House, and the Emperor. Meanwhile, the Guilds fight a continual battle to protect their
members' interests from the hands of greedy Nobles or pious Churchmen.
For now, their special knowledge protects them; the Nobility and the
Church cannot do without their services. But still they are afraid. The Church publicly denounces the sins of technology and those who
use it, yet claim (through ancient doctrine) that their own use of it
to enforce their laws is strictly necessary: they martyr themselves to
save the ignorant and sinful majority. Many in both the Noble Houses
and the Guilds would love to see the day when they can do what they
like without the Church breathing down their necks. Ruling over all is the Emperor of the Known Worlds. Seen as saviour
by some, tyrant by others, he walks a tightrope between effecting his
vision of a new age of glory, and maintaining the power to do so. Meanwhile, the suns, once so bright, are fading. Fading Suns is a science-fiction roleplaying game made by
Holistic Design Inc.
Set in the years approaching the dawn of the Sixth Millenium, it tells
of a time when Humanity enters a new Dark Age of superstition and fear.
A quasi-mediaeval society of Noble Houses, the Universal Church and
Merchant Guilds mixes with hi-tech spacecraft and weapons - the
remnants of the Second Republic, the time when human technological
achievement was at its zenith. If a new millenium is dawning, it would seem to bring little hope
for humanity. Indeed many believe that the end is nigh: the suns, that
once shone so bright, are beginning to fade. The Church preaches that
this is because of humanity's great pride and sin, which reached its
nadir in the Second Republic, and many heed their message. Yet others
hope that the phenomenon of the Fading Suns may be halted - indeed some
claim that Humanity has already found its saviour in the person of the
newly ascendent Emperor Alexius. This is the background against which the Fading Suns game is set.
Will your character be a young Noble, seeking to better his House and
his own standing in it? Will she be a Guilder, seeking for money,
technology, or possibly even a Third Republic? Will he be a pious
Churchman, or possibly even one of the many alien races available?
And where will your adventures take you? This page provides a few resources for anyone running (or thinking
of running) a Fading Suns game. It includes
house rules that I use,
designs for characters and technology, and
links to other pages which provide similar
resources.
This section includes rules and information which I have made up for Fading Suns,
changes I make to the given rules when I play, and essays detailing my thoughts on
Fading Suns in general. How To Get A Spaceship -- an essay for both
players and GMs giving my views on how to get round the sticky problem of the
prices of spaceships Psygoblin's Fading Suns Material
-- excellent unofficial Fading Suns material by the Psychedelic Goblin (Colin
Chapman). Here I detail characters I or others have created, including PCs, NPCs and
new character archetypes, along with designs for technology - new weapons and
armour, new spaceships, and new artefacts. Email me the URL for your
